其实，那树上并没有树叶，树叶是一位画家画上去的，它不是真树叶，但它达到了真树叶生动真实的效果，给了那位病人一个坚强的信念：活着，只要那片树叶不落，我的生命就不会死。结果，他真的康复了，走出病房去那棵树下看个究竟。
他站在树下，被画家的用心感动了。
因为画家是惟一了解他内心秘密的人，画家知道他在等待树叶全部掉落之后，再悄然地终结自己的生命。于是，画家顺着病人的心思设计了这么一片假树叶。就是这片假树叶，给他不断地注入活下去的勇气。
